North Carolina this week announced $12.7 million in grants intended to protect the environment and clean water throughout the state, plus keep development away from Fort Bragg. The N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund awarded 38 grants Tuesday, a news release said.
"The Clean Water Management Trust Fund is proving again how we can protect our most treasured natural resources for future generations," Bryan Gossage, executive director of the trust fund, said in the release. "We're leveraging available financial resources to acquire land to protect drinking water supplies, provide recreational opportunities, and preserve our ecological, cultural and historic resources, and prevent encroachment on our military bases."
The awards include more than $1.4 million for projects to prevent development from encroaching on Fort Bragg, which could impede military training exercises.
Fayetteville was awarded almost $310,000. This is to underwrite construction of a greenscape on two blocks of Person Street, between Cool Springs Road and Blounts Creek.
The project should reduce the amount of pollution running into Blounts Creek.
Some of the awards made in areas near the Fayetteville-Fort Bragg community include:
$448,000 to the Sandhills Area Land Trust to buy timberland in Moore County.
$1 million to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission to buy land in Scotland County.
$200,000 to kill hydrilla aquatic weed in Lake Waccamaw State park in Columbus County.
$1 million to the Nature Conservancy to buy land in Columbus County.
$226,000 to the Nature Conservancy to buy land in Hoke County.
$292,000 to the Nature Conservancy to buy land in Bladen County.
